I am currently serving as a Member of Parliament representing the Kaliabor constituency of Assam in the Lok Sabha. I am also a member of the Standing Committee on Railways and Violation of protocol norms. Within my party( Indian National Congress), I am currently serving as its National Spokesman.
Prior to joining politics, I worked in the development and non profit sector for ten years. After my graduation in Engineering from Indraprastha University, I worked in a non profit which seeks to impact social justice through youth citizenship action. After four years of working in rural India, I went to pursue my masters in public administration from New York University. During my stint in the U.S, I worked as a policy aide at the Permanent Mission of India to the U.N.
Over the past few years, I have travelled across the state to listen to the aspirations of farmers, panchayat members, teachers, religious leaders, women and young people. I started a foundation where we plan to educate 3000 children about entrepreneurship in farming. With my effort, we were successful in hosting a landmark event where 1000 students got a chance to interact with Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz. In partnership with other organizations, I have been successful in providing a platform for young film-makers through the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival and for young football players to train along with Bhaichung Bhutia and Shillong Lahjong. My organization Youth Forum on Foreign Policy has conducted many policy seminars where young professionals learn about international politics and meet foreign diplomats. In 2014, I contested the parliamentary elections representing the Congress party from Kaliabor, Assam and won with a margin of more than 93,000 votes.
